BCE: Allow user to download multiple documents into a user defined folder without copying complete Meridian folder structure

Currently in BCE, there are two modes of downloading, controled by 'Enable Download Control'

1. When it is enabled in the options of BC-Explorer (Serversetting, not client setting) we will always have the complete folder structure. With this option, we can download multiple documents.

2. If we disable the 'Enable Download Control' (applies to all users), we can download a single document to the folder we specify without the Meridian folder structure. But it is only applicable for one document downloading.

This is not user friendly. If we download multiple documents, it will create many folder structures. And each document is placed in a different folder.

Please improve this fonction.

Download from Explorer should have an option to download all in the same folder.

The current version makes the download function awkward to use. Please put it back like it was before, i.e. - select files, choose download location, and the files are simply downloaded to the specified location without the associated BC file structure.

We are testing deploying Meridian Explorer and have found the integration app will always default to the WorkSpace location set in the integration app registry.    If users do not install the integration app (AMhook tray)  then a separate download location can be used if using internet explorer active X however, that location forms the 'root' and all the files are put into the meridian structure from there.    (note chrome ceases to work without the integration app)..  this is all very confusing.. there explorer app should be simpler to use.

Rudi Pieters Oct 31, 2018 So you want the user to have the option of downloading everything in a single folder? Or map folders in Meridian to local folders?

Don Hodges Nov 8, 2018 I'm not certain of the requestor's need but the folder structure that gets downloaded is not useful to most of the users that use Explorer. There are many consumers of the documents in Explorer that do no know or are care what the folder structure in Meridian is. They simply use Explorer to get to documents that the document providers have made available to them. For example, they search the system, get 10 files in the results, but they want to download 3 of them. The user expects those 3 files to download to the location of their choosing, not a folder of their choosing, and then the path of the documents in Meridian. The Folder path should only come along if the option to download to Local Workspace is set. If the user specifies the path then I think it should drop all files into that folder without building the extra folders.

Wayne Bottomley Nov 8, 2018 Rudi, that is absolutely the case for us. At Caltech, this is causing problems for our users. We were alerted to this when users with the new Meridian Explorer system were trying to download documents to specified destination folders, but the documents did not wind up in the desired locations. Instead, much to our surprise, the rather Byzantine Meridian folder structure was incorporated and layered within our working folders. It took a bit of work to find where the files were placed and that ruins the architecture of individual folder trees. Then after you find one downloaded file and you think that's where everything will be in the future, the next time you download a document you find it's not there but some other file structure was created and you have to go on another hunt for the location. And then when you're done, if you have the time, you may move the file to where you wanted it in the first place, but to be honest, most of our users do not have time for this extra work created by what we consider to be flaw in program. This limits Meridian's utility, increases our workload, wastes our time and energy and severely heightens dissatisfaction with what has been for years a good product. ting.wang@total.com Nov 15, 2018 It should be possible to download all selected BCE items in single folder

Neil Huebner Jan 24, 2019 We have been using ME since 2011 and have been very pleased with its operation. The changes that were made have just complicated things with the long path. I would like to see BlueCielo return the download function to the way it used to be. Select lots of files, tell it where to download to, find files in that location, simple.

Philip Martin Jan 24, 2019 We at University of Colorado Boulder have been using Meridian Explorer for over 7 years. Customers, including architects, consultants, our shops and students visit our office to download drawings for projects everyday. Before our upgrade to ME 2018, we could select a common folder for all files to be downloaded to and people collected their files easily. Now ME adds the complete Meridian file structure to both the default folder and selected custom folders making it tedious to find and download files from the ME folders created, to the users personal USB drive. Please return our capability to select a destination folder without the Meridian file structure.

Lynn Fletcher Jan 29, 2019 Our Field technicians here at the University of Colorado have precious little time on their hands, and adding the meridian file structure to the download path really has created an issue. They want to simply find a drawing or file, download to desktop, and go solve the issue.

Charles Molocznik Jan 30, 2019 The inability to download files to a user designated folder, without the whole vault path included, only complicates this for common users. Users would like the files they choose to go to the location they designate. Including the entire vault path, frustrates common users who may not understand why the file they downloaded is not showing in the primary folder view. This results in users abandoning the use of the product and labeling it as non-user friendly. This defeats the purpose of making these files available for all users, regardless of skill level
