Default Groups are mandatory to determine Group and Role assignments in Meridian Portal, Power and Explorer and are part of the best practice business process and system documentation. The documented process needs to be in-sync with the system configuration.
As alternative you can change the Description of the Group to explain why you changed it.

If we delete that group and re-create it, we need to assign users in that group again, and then add the group under each project again.
