Execute action on a large number of documents or collection

Given a senior document controller using PowerWeb

When selecting more than 500 documents

Then I want to be able to perform certain administrative actions like set property value and refresh thumbnail, update rendition on that selection

Can you help clarify where this action is typically done? For example, is it typically encountered when browsing folders with a large number of documents in them, or is it typically encountered after making a search that results in a large number of documents?
