Meridian Explorer Issue: Explorer always creates the complete sub-folder structure upon downloading files.

Meridian Explorer Issue:

Explorer always creates the complete sub-folder structure upon downloading files.  This was not the behavior in earlier versions of Explorer.  In earlier versions, users could select a folder and it would put ALL of the files into that folder (with no sub-folders).  We request that the user should have the option at Download to either create or not create sub-folders.

We understand that some may believe that the sub-folders should always be created.  That reasoning is probably two-fold:

  1. Just like Windows, Meridian supports the concept of using the same file name for two different files in two different folders in a Meridian Vault.   If a customer takes advantage of that in their Vault configuration, downloading the file into ONE folder while not creating the sub-folders could result in one of the files with the same name overwriting the other.
  2. In order to honor relative pathed X-Refs inside of AutoCAD or MicroStation Drawings, Revit Models, etc., recreating the sub-folder structure can be quite beneficial.

That said, we think this should be left to the user with a choice upon download.  If the user is not concerned with the above issues or if their Vault is configured to ensure ALL files are uniquely named across the entire Vault, they should be allowed to download the selected files into one selected location with no sub-folders being created.

Thank you again for the suggestion for the extra information.

This idea is being considered for a future release of Meridian. Stay tuned for updates.

    Hello Chris,

Thank you for your reply to my suggestion on the Hagerman website. We currently use IE as our web browser in regards to Meridian Explorer, so it would still be desirable to enhance the Active X component that you mentioned. It was so nice the ME would put everything in one folder before we upgraded to the latest version last winter. It seems to me like a step backwards to not have the same capabilities in the more current browsers, Chrome, FireFox or Safari. Be that as it may, we would appreciate the ability to download files from ME to a single folder again.

    Thank you,

    Thank you for your suggestion.

There is a possibility of enhancing the ActiveX component that isused by Internet Explorer to download files to a single folder. But, this comes with some drawbacks, such as support for IE only (this would not work within Chrome or FireFox or Safari) and the use of ActiveX controls (ActiveX controls are a legacy technology).

With these limitations, would this still be desirable?
